Northrop Grumman Corporation's Sperry Marine unit has been awarded a contract to supply new-generation radar systems for two new Virginia-class attack submarines. The new radar systems will enhance navigational safety and efficiency by providing improved situational awareness for the watch team.
The contract, valued at up to $9.5 million, was awarded by the Naval Sea Systems Command. Sperry Marine will supply new AN/BPS-16(V)4 radar systems for the USS Hawaii (SSN-776) and USS North Carolina (SSN-777), the third and fourth Virginia-class submarines, which are being built at General Dynamics Electric Boat and Northrop Grumman Newport News. Sperry Marine is already under contract to supply systems for the first two Virginia-class submarines, and has also supplied similar equipment for SSN-21-class submarines and the Trident SSBN fleet.
The AN/BPS-16(V)4 is an X-band navigation radar system, which presents a clutter-suppressed real-time picture of surface radar targets and geographic features.
