Electronic Control Security, Inc. (ECSI) announced that the last stages of security upgrades are underway at the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) sites in Texas. The $1.5 million project was initiated in 2002 and is now 80 percent complete.
SPR was designed by the United States Department of Energy as oil storage sites, and is the largest stockpile of oil in the country. Given the global situation, DOE is determined to fill the reserves to full capacity, and to strenuously protect them. The four SPR sites are located along the Louisiana and Texas shorelines.
“This upgrade was underway long before the recent terror attacks against domestic interests and before ‘dirty bombs’ were dinner conversation,” commented Arthur Barchenko, President and CEO of ECSI. “Our business is about finding security solutions to prevent infiltration and guarding against terrorist activities. We are very proud to have been chosen to help protect the perimeter of these sensitive and important sites.”
The SPR security upgrade is a collaborative effort between ECSI and Tandem Construction, which have teamed up to provide state-of-the-art security solutions. The complex three-phased project includes fence and security system installation; installation of two different types of security systems, including the Infrared Perimeter Intrusion Detection (IPID) system and its Fiber Optic Intelligence Detection System (FOIDS). The IPID system is comprised of pulsed infrared sensors that detect an intruder passing through its electronic beams and then pinpoint the exact zone of intrusion. FOIDS is ECSI’s Sagnac Interferometry technology. Both are in use at nuclear power generating facilities and government facilities across the country.
