The new passenger-only vessel being built at Dakota Creek Shipyard in Anacortes is beginning to look like a real ferry.
As January drew to a close, Dakota Creek workers were in the final stages of constructing the hull of the ferry, named Snohomish. In an adjacent area of the Dakota building, work has started on building the ferry's superstructure.
While the shape of the ferry is coming together, the main generators and engines are being tested in shop tests. Detroit Diesel put the diesel engines through preliminary tests in the company's facility in Detroit.
Workers will focus on machining the mounting to hold the ferry's water jets. And if all goes well, the forward portion of the superstructure will be mounted onto the hull.
