Singapore-Flagged Tanker Sinks Off Malaysia's West Coast

A Singapore-flagged tanker sank in the Strait of Malacca off Malaysia's west coast after colliding with another tanker on Monday, a maritime official said.

Rescuers saved the 12-member crew of the 1,920 dwt Singapura Timur, and no injuries were reported after it collided with the Bahamas-flagged MT Rowan near Malaysia's Undan island early on Monday.

The official at the Maritime Rescue and Coordinating Center said Singapura Timur, which was carrying 1,500 tons of bitumen, was heading towards Malaysia's Port Klang.

"Singapura Timur sank within one hour of the collision but all its crew were rescued," the official said, adding there were no immediate signs of pollution in the area.

The empty 44,646 dwt MT Rowan was on its way to Port Kassim in Pakistan.
