Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced that its Newport News Shipbuilding division has increased its indoor material storage capacity by more than 500,000 square feet with the addition of new warehouse space in the West Park Warehouse Complex in Hampton.
“The new warehouse not only provides Newport News Shipbuilding with increased storage capacity, but provides us room to execute several changes to our procurement and logistics strategies in an effort to reduce overall cost, increase material availability and better support our programs across the shipyard,” said Brian Fields, Newport News’ Vice President, Supply Chain Management.
Additional storage capacity facilitates Newport News’ ability to buy parts and materials in bulk. It will also help the shipyard consolidate and centralize its logistics processes, which will reduce hand-offs and infrastructure cost while increasing material availability and program responsiveness.
The shipyard will relocate 60-80 employees to the warehouse complex, which will support all shipyard programs.
