The State of California has mandated programs requiring contingency plan holders to identify protective response strategies for environmentally sensitive sites throughout the state. Area mapping of environmentally sensitive areas is an example of how some state regulators are stepping beyond federal requirements in initiating response readiness particularly in areas that might be environmentally impacted by a major spill. While California may be the first to require such state regulations, other states are taking their lead from California and looking at similar programs.
