NATO Unconcerned by Russian Warships in English Channel
A squadron of Russian warships entered the English Channel on Friday but a NATO official dismissed a Russian media report that they were there to conduct military exercises.
Avoiding the Edges of the Sea
Mariners do best when they avoid the edges of the sea â the shoals, rocks, and other hard spots. Coming into contact with the edges of the sea at other than a slow walking speed can ruin an otherwise pleasant voyage. Unfortunately, though, vessels have been making hard contact with the edges since Noahâs Ark grounded on Mount Ararat, rendering the Ark unseaworthy. For a while, it was thought that the leadline would reduce groundings, but one canât be swinging the leadline constantly.

Man Arrested over Death of Stowaway in Shipping Container
A man was arrested in Northern Ireland on Tuesday on suspicion of murder after the death of an Afghan Sikh who was among 35 suspected stowaways found in a shipping container at a dock in England three days ago, police said. Police said the 34-year-old man was arrested just after midday on a motorway at Banbridge, about 28 miles (45 km) south-west of Belfast. He will be taken to England for questioningâŚ
East Sussex Coastguard Rescues Labradoodle
Coastguard Rescue Teams from Hastings and Rye Bay have been working to rescue a Labradoodle called Pepper that slipped over the cliffs at Ecclesbourne Glen near Hastings yesterday afternoon at just before 3 p.m. The call was passed to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre at Dover (MRCC) by Sussex Police. The MRCC sent Hastings Coastguard Rescue Team to the scene and a cliff man spotted Pepper on a very narrow ridge.
Dover Sets Freight Vehicles Export Record
A record number of freight vehicles departed on services through the Port of Dover yesterday, reaching numbers not seen since before the recession. The port said 5,337 freight vehicles departed for Calais and Dunkirk from Europeâs busiest ferry port, beating the previous record of 5,322 set in 2008. Crossing the English Channel by Ferry Preferred to Chunnel
More people used ferries to travel from the UK to the continent last year although cross-Channel numbers are still down on those of decade ago. UK Ferries Carried a Million More Last Year
Annual 2013 figures show more passengers, cars and coaches carried by the UK ferry industry, compared with 2012, according to figures released by industry body, âDiscover Ferriesâ. Britainâs ferry industry showed growth across all its travel sectors last year, with passenger numbers up 2.6% overall to 38 million, all cars carried up 1.1% to 8.37million, and coaches up overall 4.1% to 158,470 - according to 2013 âFerrystatâ figures, quoted by industry body, âDiscover Ferriesâ.

U.K Coastguard Helps with Flood Rescue Efforts
The U.K. Coastguards has been working through the night as parts of the U.K. have been hit by one of the largest tidal surges in decades. Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCCs) at Stornoway, Aberdeen, Humber, Holyhead, Liverpool, Thames, Dover and Falmouth have been managing the rescue efforts. Nearly 50 Coastguard Rescue Teams have been sent to some of the worst affected areas. Coastguards from elsewhere in the country were also sent to help.

Jensen-Designed Tugboat Delivered to Hyack Maritime
Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering firm, Jensen Maritime, announce delivery of the 'Hawaii', the first of two 120â x 35â x 19â Jensen-designed ABS machinery class ocean-going tugboats, to Hyak Maritime, a marine equipment and vessel owner based in Dover, Delaware. The Hawaii was built by JT Marine of Vancouver, Wash. Hyakâs second tug, the Washington, is scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2013.

Cruise Season Gets Underway in the Port of Kiel
âAIDAcaraâ is first to call at the Ostseekai Terminal. The 2013 cruise shipping year opened in Kiel on April 13 when the first ship of the season, AIDAcara, arrived at the Ostseekai from Dover. She berthed at around 0900 at the cruise shipping terminal after earlier being treated to a water fountain display from an SFK tug when she left the Kiel Canal. Dirk Claus, Managing Director of the Port of Kiel said, âWe are well prepared for the cruise shipping season.
P&O Introduce Irish Sea Fast Ferry After Overhaul
Ship refurbishment specialists Blu Marine complete the £500,000 contract, and P&O has begun operating the ship on its Troon to Larne service. Blu Marine carried out the work in Belfast Harbour, which mainly involved fitting the P&O Express with a new Club Lounge designed to meet the needs of business travellers. The 90-capacity lounge will offer complimentary news-papers, magazines, drinks and snacks, with facilities in place to allow passengers to use laptops, tablets and mobile phones.
