Pirate Attacks on the Rise off Somalia

Pirate activity has increased recently off the coast of Somalia with four attempted attacks occurring on motor vessels in the Gulf of Aden since Sept. 19. Three separate unsuccessful attacks occurred Sept. 19 and 20, while the most recent attack occurred Sept. 26 on the Panamanian-flagged Motor Vessel Handy V, in which seven pirates were arrested by the Turkish ship TCG Gediz (F-495), assigned to NATO's Piracy Task Force.

EU NAVFOR Stops Suspected Pirates Again

Late afternoon of Sunday 20th of September, a Bulk Carrier reported an approach of a skiff while in the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor in the Gulf of Aden. On board of the Bulk Carrier a unit of the Yemeni Navy was embarked. On sighting of these military personnel the skiff abandoned the approach and tried to flee as reported by the merchant vessel to the UK Maritime Trade Organization in Bahrain.

Gjøa Hull Safely Through Gulf of Aden

The hull of the North Sea Gjøa platform is on its way to Norway from the Samsung shipyard in South Korea. At the weekend an EU naval force provided a military escort as the hull passed through the notorious Gulf of Aden. The result of 1.7 million hours worked in South Korea, the Gjøa platform hull is now on its way to Stord via the Suez Canal. The long voyage to Stord is estimated to take 40-45 days.

EU NAVFOR Warship Stops Suspected Pirates

On Sept. 7 the EU NAVFOR German warship Brandenburg investigated a suspected pirate skiff with a crew of five in the Gulf of Aden just south of Al Mukalla. The EU NAVFOR warship launched a helicopter that observed, and filmed, the skiffs crew throwing ladders and weapons overboard. The skiff was ordered to stop but continued on at speed. The EU NAVFOR warship, through an interpreter, exhorted the skiff to stop but the skiff continued.

At approximately 8:00 a.m. local time, Aug. 26, Somali Pirates aboard Motor Vessel (M/V) Win Far, fired what appeared to be a large caliber weapon at a U.S. Navy SH-60B Helicopter from Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 49, embarked aboard USS Chancellorsville (CG 62). No rounds of ammunition struck the SH-60B. The SH-60 crew did not return fire. No personnel injuries resulted from the incident. Win Far is a Taiwanese-flagged vessel that was pirated April 6.

Naval Forces Prevented Pirate Attack

The incident occurred in the International Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) in the Gulf of Aden. Six pirates in a skiff were reported to approach the Turkish cargo ship MV Elgiznur Cebi. The pirates were forced to break off their attack by a helicopter from the EU NAVFOR frigate Bremen after warning shots were fired. Boarding was subsequently conducted by the boarding team of the Greek frigate Navarinon, once it had arrived at the scene of the incident.
