Spanish Warship Disrupts Pirate Off Somali Coasts

On September 22, EU NAVFOR Spanish ship GALICIA disrupted a pirate action group, comprised of one whaler and two skiffs. Galicia was patrolling off the east coast of Somalia and thanks to detailed information gathering, the Spanish ship was able to intercept two skiffs and the whaler. The group was located at night only 500 meters from the Somali coast by one of Galicia’s helicopters, which started the preparation for the interception.

MV Olib G Pirated in Gulf of Aden

Early on the morning of 8 September, the Merchant Vessel (MV) Olib G, flagged Malta, was pirated in the East part of the Gulf of Aden. After a report from a merchant vessel that a skiff was approaching MV Olib G, and after several unsuccessful attempts to make contact with the vessel, the USS Princeton warship of Task Force 151 launched its helicopter. The helicopter was able to identify two pirates on board MV Olib G.

Early the morning of Tuesday, August 3, the MV Bow Saga sent a distress call that she was under attack from pirates in the middle of the Gulf of Aden. An EU NAVFOR unit close by sent her helicopter to assist and stopped the attack. The Norwegian Chemical tanker MV Bow Saga was proceeding through the transit corridor in the middle of the Gulf of Aden when it came under attack. A pirate skiff with seven people on board shot at the bridge, damaging the windows.

MV Suez Hijacked in the Gulf of Aden

In the early hours of 2 August, the MV Suez reported being under small arms fire from a pirate attack and minutes later she reported pirates on board. After notification of the attack, attempts were made to make contact with the MV Suez but to no avail. MV Suez was travelling in the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) when attacked. Immediately after the first report a helicopter was directed to the ship but pirates had already taken over the command of the vessel.
