BMP3 Continues to Defeat Pirates

On 6 January, the MV Front Warrior and the MV BW Austria defeated pirate attacks through the use of Best Management Practices. The MV Front Warrior, a Bahaman flagged Oil tanker was attacked at 0232Z approximately 300 nautical miles South East of Muscat. Rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) were fired at the vessel from 1 skiff in order to attempt a boarding. The ship’s crew used fire hoses to deter the pirates as well as razor wire on the perimeter.

In recognition of the International Maritime Organization’s “Year of Piracy,” WISTA USA announced that world renowned piracy negotiator, Suzanne Williams QPM, will be the keynote speaker at its sixth annual WISTA USA luncheon on March 21st, kicking off the Connecticut Maritime Association’s Shipping 2011 conference. The luncheon will begin at 11:45 in the Ballroom II of the Hilton Stamford Hotel and is open to all at a cost of $55 for WISTA members and $70 for non-members.
Laser Cannons to Defend Ships from Pirates
According to a Jan. 11 report from The Telegraph, British engineers are developing a new type of defence system that uses lasers to incapacitate pirates by dazzling them as they approach a ship.
MV Marida Marguerite Released
At 1330Z on 28 December 2010, the MV Marida Marguerite was released from pirate control. The vessel which is Marshall Island flagged and German owned, was pirated on the morning of 8 May 2010.
MV EMS River Pirated in Indian Ocean

In the early hours of 27 December, the MV EMS River was pirated approximately 175 nautical miles North East of the port of Salalah, Oman. The 5,200 tonne general cargo ship, which is Antigua/Barbuda flagged and German owned, was on her way to San Nicolas, Greece from Jebel Ali in the UAE at the time of the attack. She has a crew of 8 (1 Romanian, 7 Philipinos) and is carrying a cargo of Petroleum Coke.

During the night of the 22 December, the MV Thor Nautilus defeated a pirate attack thanks to the use of BMP (Best Management Practices), showing the efficiency of self-protection measures in this high risk area. The Thai flagged cargo ship was attacked by one skiff, approximately 900 nautical miles North East of the Somali coastal village of Eyl. At midday on 20 December, the MV Orna was pirated in the Indian Ocean, approximately 400 nautical miles North East of the Seychelles. The attack was launched from two attack skiffs, with pirates firing small arms and rocket propelled grenades at the merchant vessel. The vessel was stopped and boarded by at least four pirates. The crew is co-operating and no damage is reported. The MV Orna is a Panama flagged, UAE owned bulk cargo vessel with a dead weight of 27 915 tonnes.

MV Jahan Moni Pirated in Somali Basin

On 5 December, the MV Jahan Moni was pirated in the Somali Basin, approximately 1300 nautical miles East of Eyl (Somalia), and only 300 nautical miles from the Indian coast. The Bangladesh-flagged bulk carrier has a crew of 26, all of whom are reported to be Bangladeshi. Including the MV Jahan Moni, pirates are currently holding 23 vessels, with 547 hostages.

The MV Albedo is Malaysian flagged and owned, with a crew of 23 (Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Iranian). The vessel was carrying containers and was bound for Mombasa from Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Including the MV Albedo, pirates are currently holding 22 vessels with 521 hostages.

In the early hours of 26 November, the MV Medi Chennai was attacked approximately 880 nautical miles (1,600 kilometres) East of Port Victoria, Seychelles. This is the furthest east attack ever registered by EU NAVFOR since the beginning of its Operation in December 2008, the last eastern most attack being 60 nautical miles west from this one.
