Offshore Renewables: The Future is Now
While the recent swoon in world oil and gas prices has predictably cooled a number of offshore renewable projects, there is a palpable change regarding the way in which the world views renewable energy. Renewable energy projects, at one time merely serving as window dressing, are slowly weaving their way into the mainstream energy mix, with European countries, namely the U.K., leading the way. In November world leaders will arrive in Paris to negotiate a new global agreement on climate change…
More than Mega: Diversity Defines the Dredging Industry
The mantra of recent times has been the worldwide trend to ‘mega’. Mega container ships created the need for mega ports which required mega dredging projects. These in turn demand mega dredging vessels. All this is true but disregards another development: the consolidation of the major dredging contractors into larger companies with long-term strategies that have resulted in diversification. Today’s major dredging contractors do more than dredge.
Combatting Maritime Cyber Security Threats
The U.S. Executive Branch has declared that the cyber threat is one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation, and that America’s economic prosperity in the 21st century will depend on effective cyber security. Before the maritime industry sounds the danger signal, it needs to monitor other industries and branches of the government and take proactive preventative measures.

Norway’s (Winding) Path Ahead
A precipitous plunge in energy pricing is problematic for a prodigious oil producing nation such as Norway, but it really only tells a portion of the story when evaluating the immediate future for the collective maritime and offshore energy markets. Prolonged stagnation in the global economy, growing political tension and instability in several world regions, and a general breakdown in international…
Design & Operation: Wind Farm Support Vessels
Offshore wind farm development has been led globally by the UK, followed by Germany. Both countries have governments with long term commitments to renewable energy. Denmark, Belgium and The Netherlands are building wind farms, but they are a long way behind the leaders in offshore wind. In 2014 the UK accounted for over 50% of all the offshore wind energy generated globally. All of these countries border the North Sea…

An interview with NOIA’s Randall Luthi provides unique perspective on where the offshore energy business has been, where it is now, and where it could be headed next.
Threats to Global Navigation Satellite Systems
Originally developed to guide Allied convoys safely across the Atlantic, the use of synchronized low frequency radio signals as a navigational aid revolutionized modern maritime navigation in the 1940s. Faced with operating ships and aircraft over vast areas, researchers pioneered the use of radio signals to aid navigation in regions where poor weather conditions made traditional methods—such as dead reckoning and celestial navigation—exceptionally difficult.
Editorial: Across the Seas & Around the World
Norwegians are seafarers, with maritime and offshore oil and gas tightly woven into the DNA of this population of more than five million. On the eve of Norshipping 2015, which is personally my twelfth Norshipping since 1993, the Norwegian Shipowners Association (NSA) released its annual “Maritime Outlook” report. Full insights on its findings start on page 42, and you can pick up the entire 126 page report online courtesy of the link provided in the story.

Marine News Editor's Note
It is at times like this that bumper sticker humor comes in handy. One of my favorites has to be the infamous “God, please let me have another oil boom – I promise…

Oil Majors Push Offshore Players for 30% Cuts
30%That’s the minimum level of capital expenditure cuts facing owners and operators of offshore rigs, vessels and various support services, as they scramble to keep equipment working and their heads above water during one of the worst oil downturns in 30 years. From a high of $108 per barrel in June of last year, prices plummeted roughly 60% as supply surpassed weakening demand, crashing in November to around $44 a barrel.
