Marine Insurance: Climate Change Challenges for the Shipping Industry
With 90% of global trade moved by sea, shipping is a major contributor to climate change. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) estimated that the industry’s greenhouse gas emissions grew by 10% between 2012 and 2018, while the industry’s share of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions grew slightly to almost 3%, about the same volume as Germany. It also forecasts that ‘business as usual’ could…
Wartsila Steps Up Green Fuel Push with Methanol-powered Ship
Marine and energy equipment maker Wartsila will roll out its first methanol-powered engine in a new ship next year as the group accelerates green fuel technology options for shipping, a company executive said. With about 90% of world trade transported by sea, shipping accounts for nearly 3% of the world's CO2 emissions, yet environmental campaigners say efforts by the sector to cut emissions by 2050…

Ships Get Older and Slower as Emissions Rules Bite
If shipping is the beating heart of global trade, its pulse is about to get slower. Faced with uncertainty about which fuels to use in the long term to cut greenhouse gas emissions, many shipping firms are sticking with aging fleets, but older vessels may soon have to start sailing slower to comply with new environmental rules. From next year, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires all…
ClassNK Updates Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels
Classification society ClassNK informs it has released the "Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels (Edtion 2.0)," which sets forth safety requirements for ships fueled by methanol, ethanol, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ammonia.
