Trouble loomed on the horizon as they were drifting toward land carrying more than 132,277 pounds of rape seed used to make canola oil, 450,000 gallons of fuel oil and 11,700 gallons of diesel fuel with the only help more than 400 miles away.

Donjon Shipbuilding Floats Tugboat in Presque Isle Bay
As part of the ongoing construction process, on December 22, 2010, Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair, floated the 135-foot-long, 10,500-horsepower tugboat Ken Boothe Sr. in Presque Isle Bay. The vessel was moved from Donjon Shipbuilding’s 1250-foot graving dock to a wet berth within the facility where final construction and outfitting of the vessel will be completed in mid-February 2011. The Bisso Doctrine
The Bisso Doctrine takes its name from the 1955 U.S. Supreme Court case, Bisso v. Inland Waterways Corp., in which it was established in a majority opinion of the Court that exculpatory clauses in towing contracts are invalid as a matter of public policy. That decision has had serious impact on the United States towing industry, and has affected decisions on whether to make U.S. choice of law and forum applicable to towing contracts where there were other options.
Coast Guard Great Lakes Ice Breaking Ops Begin Early
The U.S. Coast Guard commenced Operation Coal Shovel Dec. 15 after colder temperatures caused a rapid development of ice in the eastern Great Lakes. Van Oord Commissions Jack-Up for Offshore Wind Market
Sietas is to be the first German shipyard to develop and build a jack-up vessel used for offshore wind farm installation. The order, which was signed in Hamburg, comes from Dutch-based marine contractor Van Oord, working on dredging, offshore and marine engineering projects worldwide. In addition, Van Oord has placed an option for a second ship of the same type. No details have been released as to the purchase price.
The Forgotten Merchant Mariners of WWII
Don Horton of North Carolina started his career on barges during World War II at the age of 10. His father, mother, sister and brothers all worked on U.S. merchant marine coastwise tugs and barges during the war. In 1942 his eldest brother, William Lee Horton, Jr., was killed when a German U-boat attacked his tug, nine miles of the coast of Virginia. The Merchant Mariners Act of 1988 granted veterans status to merchant mariners who served during WWII.

EU NAVFOR HNLMS Amsterdam Disrupts Pirates
On 6 November 2010, the EU NAVFOR Dutch ship HNLMS Amsterdam successfully located and disrupted one Pirate Action Group (PAG) comprised of two skiffs with nine suspected pirates onboard. On 5 November, two suspicious skiffs were detected, during a patrol flight by the warship’s helicopter.
