Trans-Alaska Pipeline, Crowley Workers Reach 10 Million Hours
The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) has announced that its workforce has achieved a major safety milestone: 10 million hours worked without an OSHA Day Away From Work Case (DAFWC). Of those hours, Crowley contributed towards working 20 percent of them, or 2 million hours, safely. This means that since June 2009, no TAPS worker, including the more than 225 Crowley employees, has been injured to the extent that they missed a day of work.
Shipping Disruptions: Japan Battles Back
Japan is waging a public relations war as it struggles to control the nuclear contamination threat at home while playing down the concerns of consumers abroad. Fears of tainted goods from the battered nation are affecting trade flows, with regional weather distributing radiation particles and hysteria across Asia. In South Korea, panic over radioactive rain in March saw schools shut down en masse, despite the minute level of radiation posing no known health risks.
Danish Shipowners: On Growth track in Wake of Economic Crisis
Denmark has retained its position as one of the world's leading maritime nations, despite the economic crisis. In terms of operated tonnage, Denmark is today the fifth largest maritime nation in the world. In all, Danish shipping companies transport some 10% of the world trade. Henrik Segercrantz reports on Danish maritime issues. Danish shipping is global, with trade within Europe counting for only a quarter of the industry’s total revenues.

MV Rosalia D’Amato Pirated in Indian Ocean
Early morning on 21 April, the Bulk Carrier MV Rosalia D’Amato was pirated approximately 350NM South East of Salalah, Oman, in the Indian Ocean. The 74,500 tonne Italian flagged and owned vessel was on its way to Bandar Imam Khomeini (Iran) from Paranagua (Brazil) when it was attacked by a single skiff. Coalition warships had communications with the vessel and were told: ‘pirates onboard stay away’. The MV Rosalia D’Amato has a crew of 21 (six Italians, 15 Filipinos).
Underwater Hull of ro/ro Vessel Coated with Ecospeed
In February a 200-meter ro/ro vessel was given a protective Ecospeed coating in Gibraltar. Thrustmaster of Texas, Inc. received a contract from Hyundai Heavy Industries for the supply and installation of multiple sets of 5MW azimuth thrusters for the next generation deep water drill ships being built at Hyundai’s shipyard in Ulsan, Korea. The vessels are of the Gusto P 10,000 design and are capable of drilling in water depths of up to 10,000ft. Each vessel uses six underwater mountable thrusters for dynamic positioning per ABS DPS-3 specifications.

Non-indigenous species were no match for the BALPURE electrolytic disinfection ballast water treatment system. The BALPURE®ballast water treatment system from Severn Trent De Nora successfully completed shipboard testing in December 2010, effectively neutralizing non-indigenous species. Towboats Rescue Runaway Restaurant
On Friday, March 11, Jeff Ruby’s Waterfront restaurant, situated on a barge on the Ohio River, broke loose from its moorings and began floating down river, with diners trapped onboard, toward the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge. According to local media the barge floated 85 feet downriver and was saved from hitting the bridge by a mooring cable that was still attached. The restaurant is two miles from where McGinnis Inc.
