Day on Bering No Ordinary Day
US Coast Guard cutter 'Munro' navigated shifting ice fields to close on Bering Sea fishing fleet, then rendered emergency medical help. While the weapons and operations departments were wrapping up the day’s second boarding, a radio call reached Munro’s bridge from fishing vessel Nordic Fury, then only three miles away. A member of their crew had suffered deep lacerations to his hand, which had been partially crushed freeing a net fouled in the vessel’s screws.
U.S. Beached Tsunami Dock to be Salvaged
Swept away during the Japan tsunami of March 11, 2011, the steel, concrete, & foam dock beached at Olympic National Park, Wash. is to be removed at last. On December 18, 2012, the dock beached along the boundaries of Olympic National Park and NOAA’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary in Washington state. NOAA has contracted a local salvage company in Washington to complete the removal efforts by early April.
Hydrex Divers Repair Hulls in Europe & W. Africa
Hydrex teams of diver/technicians recently mobilized to vessels berthed in Zeebrugge (Belgium), Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and Douala (Cameroon). Another Tankship Released by Somali Pirates
EU Naval Force Flagship ESPS Méndez Núnez assists 'MV Smyrni' after it sails out of the Somali pirate's holding anchorage. MV Smyrni, with a crew of 26, was carrying 135,000 tonnes of crude oil when she was hijacked on 11 May 2012. After ten months of being held in a pirate anchorage off the Somali coast, it is understood that a ransom was paid for the vessel, and on 10 March 2013, she was released by her captors.

Björn Lagerkvist, 1941 - 2013
It is with deep sadness and regret we report that Mr Björn Lagerkvist, former President of the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) passed away on Friday 1 March 2013 after a long-suffering illness. Mr Lagerkvist was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Swedish marine industry association Sweboat in 1975 and attended his first ICOMIA Congress in Oslo that same year – consecutively attending Congress for the next 37-years.
Safety Alert Issued Following Lifeboat Drill Fatalities
Malta’s Maritime Safety Investigation Unit issue a safety alert following lifeboat accident that took the lives of five 'Thomson Majesty' crew. "On 10 February 2013, the Maltese registered passenger vessel Thomson Majesty was berthed port side alongside in Santa Crux de La Palma. The ship commenced a General Emergency and Life Boat Drill for all crew members. Three lifeboats on the outboard side were to be lowered to the water and sent away for training purposes.
