Keel Laid for Lead Ship of Arctic Tanker Series
A keel laying ceremony was held Monday at Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. for the first of six ships in the project 42К Arctic Shuttle Tanker series. The six tankers in the series will be named after the famous Russian explorers of the Arctic, including participants to the Great Northern Expedition of the 18th century. The ships are being built to the dual Russian Maritime Register of Shipping / Lloyd’s Register class.

Exporting LNG from Yamal in Russia’s high Arctic calls for a special type of LNG carrier never built before. The new series of 15 Arctic-capable LNG carriers to be built in Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard, each capable of transporting 172,000 cu m of LNG and operating in second year ice up to 2.5 meters thick, will be built to dual Bureau Veritas/Russian Register class.
Bestobell Secures Another Marine Order
Bestobell Marine has secured an order for its cryogenic globe and check valves for the second LNG carrier in the Yamal series of vessels being built at DSME shipyard in South Korea. After winning the contract to supply cryogenic valves to the first vessel that will be owned and operated by Russian company Sovcomflot, the company proved it had the expertise and capabilities to supply the second Yamal vessel, which will be owned and operated by Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL).
