South Korean Ferry Captain Sentenced to 36 Years
The captain of a South Korean ferry that capsized in April killing 304 passengers was jailed for 36 years on November 11, 2014, after a court found him guilty of negligence, but was acquitted of homicide for which prosecutors had sought the death penalty. The court convicted the ship's chief engineer of homicide for not aiding two injured fellow crew members, making him the only one of four facing homicide charges to be found guilty on that count, and sentenced him to 30 years in prison.

Bell Recovered from Wreck of HMS Erebus
The ship's bell recovered from the recently discovered Franklin Expedition shipwreck, HMS Erebus, was unveiled by the Honorable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada. The artifact was recovered during dives and archaeological investigation by Parks Canada's underwater archaeology team in September. The bell was found on the deck adjacent to the ship's displaced windlass (a form of anchor winch), above which it was originally mounted.

A U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami hoisted an injured man Wendesday night from the Bimini Superfast ferry approximately 10 miles off the coast of Bimini, the Bahamas. Watchstanders in the Coast Guard 7th District command center received the request for a medical evacuation at 6:20 p.m., Wednesday. The 35-year-old man aboard the Bimini Superfast ferry had reportedly suffered a head injury.
SAR Boat Named ‘Ship of the Year’ by KNVTS

The U.S. Navy has awarded Willard Marine, Inc. (WMI), a five-year contract to provide two types of 7-meter rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) that will serve as ready service lifeboats for search-and-rescue missions.
