June 24, 2014

The ‘Day of the Seafarer’ is an official United Nations international observance day celebrated on 25 June every year, in order to celebrate seafarers around the world.

The event is organised by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) with the aim to raise awareness of seafarers and highlight the often invisible role they play in our lives every day, delivering over 90% of the world’s goods.

Seafarers take part in the day by posting photos of their lives at sea and the public can also participate by sharing what seafarers have brought to them and thank them for doing so.

At the heart of this year’s campaign is the simple sentence “Seafarers brought me….”. IMO is inviting everyone to complete the sentence with a word of their choice and post it on social media, adding the hashtag “#thankyouseafarers”. The missing word can be anything that came by sea: from the cars people drive, the food people eat, the clothes people wear, the gadgets they use or the furniture they sit on.
