America, a 139 ft. schooner and recreation of the most famous American racing vessel of all time, helped kick-off Sail Boston 2000 when it sailed into Boston Harbor, July 14. The replica will now make Boston her summer port. Boston is the official U.S. port-of-call in the Tall Ships 2000 Race Series, being organized by the American Sail Training Association (ASTA) to celebrate the Millennium.
Beginning in April 2000, two Tall Ship races will start from Southampton, England and Genoa, Italy, finishing in Cadiz, Spain. The combined fleet will then race across the Atlantic to Bermuda, from where it will cruise in company north to Boston, making brief stops in such places as New York City, as well as a host of other Massachusetts locations.
