U.S. imposes economic sanctions against Syria

May 12, 2004

President Bush issued an Executive Order imposing economic sanctions against Syria. Sanctions were imposed because Syria is seen by the United States as supporting terrorism, continuing its occupation of Lebanon, pursuing weapons of mass destruction and missile programs, and undermining efforts to stabilize and reconstruct Iraq. Virtually all U.S. exports to Syria are prohibited. Persons trading with both Syria and the United States are urged to exercise caution so as to avoid inadvertent violations of these sanctions.
