MES Retrofits Hybrid System to RTGs in Thailand
Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES), its subsidiary, MES Technoservice Co., Ltd. (STS) have retrofitted latest hybrid system to the existing five units of RTGs with two months erection period at site and successfully handed over to Leam Chabang International Terminal Co., Ltd. in Leam Chabang Thailand in this August.
This retrofitting job has been ordered followed by the successful energy saving performance on one unit of RTG retrofitting, which was our first unit of retrofitted hybrid system in the overseas market, in LCIT in the year 2013.
This first unit has been well evaluated with the record of less than eight liters per hour (about 50% saving), which was the top class fuel saving performance in the world, under the actual operation. This hybrid RTG was the first RTG hybrid system retrofitting in Laem Chabang Port and Thailand, and then celebrated at the ceremony together with many invitees including customers, port members and press in Thailand.
Furthermore, LCIT has received Green Energy Award at LCP (Leam Chabang Port) 23rd Anniversary by the environmental contribution with this hybrid RTG one year later after going into the actual operation.
In addition to the superior energy saving technology on the former hybrid RTG, the innovated energy storage system, which optimizes the supply power between power pack and batteries, has been applied. The peak voltage of batteries is consequently controlled and optimum battery volume can be realized.
Not only the crane manufacturers but also other suppliers are very keen upon the development of energy saving technology on RTGs which include diesel engine, same as the read vehicles. Our hybrid system consists of small sized engine with variable speed control and lithium battery to effectively use the regenerated power.
Necessary power on RTG comes from power pack and battery, and its fuel saving performance will be determine by the degree of their energy sharing.
MES’ sophisticated hybrid technology with eco-system, which can supply the optimum power from power pack and battery, will be able to obtain the superior fuel saving performance of maximum 60% and reduction of CO2 emission.
The necessity of action to the circumstance issue is now globally highlighted. MES and STS are developing the new technology and supplying new cranes with it. The companies also apply the environmental oriented technology to the existing cranes, e.g. retrofitted EVSC, hybrid RTG, and e-RTG.
According to the recent track record of energy saving RTGs until 2014, 138 units of brand new and 35 units of retrofit type have been delivered in global market.
