Polish shipyard Remontowa Shipbuilding SA has signed a contract for building three car-and-passenger ferries for the Canadian ship owner - BC Ferries Company, said Xinhua.

The Remontowa Shipbuilding shipyard in the Polish seaside city of Gdansk has laid down the keel of the first ferry. The first ferry is to be finished in the third term of 2016.

Two of the ferries to be built in Poland will replace the old ones, while the third one will make a seasonal supplement to the regular units. The ferries will be 105 meters long and able to take 145 cars and 600 passengers onboard.

Earlier Remontowa won in a tender, competing with nine foreign shipyards from Germany, Norway and others. The contract covers building fully-equipped ferries and their delivery to the home port.

The total value of the contract is 473 million zloty (around 126 million U.S. dollars) and has been signed last year.
