IMO Issues Reminder on SOLAS Changes

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

August 5, 2002

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) posted a reminder that various important changes to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS Convention) came into effect on July 1, 2002. Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs) are required on most new ships constructed on or after 1 July 2002. A study is underway to determine VDR requirements for existing ships. Automatic Identification Systems (AISs) are required on most new ships constructed on or after July 1, 2002. Carriage requirements for existing ships provide for a phase-in period extending through July 1, 2007, depending upon the size and type ship. Ships carrying an approved Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) will be accepted as meeting the chart carriage requirements of SOLAS. Source: HK Law
