Crowley Promotes Sweeney

Crowley Maritime Corporation promoted Alex Sweeney to vice president and general manager of its energy and marine services business unit. Sweeney will live in Seattle and report to Chairman, President and CEO Tom Crowley Jr. He replaces Steve Peterson, who is leaving the company.

Sweeney will be responsible for all aspects of Crowley's specialized services provided to companies engaged in the exploration, production and distribution of oil and gas. Areas of operation extend from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to the Russian Far East to Africa. Energy support services draw upon several disciplines including upstream logistics, shore base services, marine engineering, offshore construction support, and specialized transportation and logistics on the North Slope.

Sweeney also oversees the company's worldwide ocean towing and specialized transportation services, which are provided with a diversified fleet of high-horsepower tugs and large flat-deck barges.

Sweeney joined Crowley in 1980 and has more than 23 years experience in marine operations for Crowley on the east and west coasts. In 1995 he was promoted to director of Atlantic operations and in 1999 was relocated to Valdez and promoted to general manager, Valdez services. A year later, he was named Vice President of the Valdez operation.. Most recently, he served as vice president, Russian Far East operations. Sweeney is a past recipient of the Thomas Crowley Trophy, Crowley's highest honor. He earned his undergraduate degree from City University in Seattle and completed his MBA in 1995.
