Hamburg-based Becker Marine Systems will present its 1,000th Becker Mewis Duct in Oslo at Nor-Shipping 2015.

The use of all ducts previously delivered will have lowered CO2 by more than 1.4 million metric tons. The Becker Mewis Duct has not been a successful product for Becker Marine Systems alone, the company said. It is also contributing towards the global objective of enhanced sustainability in the shipping industry.

The Becker Twisted Fin is also being presented at the trade fair. Becker Marine Systems recently received new orders for 20 of these nozzles that are also energy saving devices. The expertise of the global market leader for high-performance rudders with maneuvering systems is underscored by the current order for the largest fin rudder in the world measuring 78.5 square meters. It will provide a 19,200 TEU container ship optimal maneuvering capabilities, even at a length of 400 meters and a width of just under 60 meters.

In addition to rudder and energy-saving solutions, Becker Marine Systems’ business areas also include the external supply of power (cold ironing) based on liquefied natural gas (LNG) to ships lying at port. The LNG Hybrid Barge will begin supplying power to cruise ships at the Port of Hamburg. In future, Becker Marine Systems would like to offer this environmentally-friendly LNG technology not only to cruise ships, but to container ships, bulkers and tankers as well.

Becker Marine Systems’ booth at Nor-Shipping in Oslo will be located in the German Pavilion in Hall C (booth C01-01e). This is where, among other things, at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 4 the 1,000th Becker Mewis Duct is being celebrated at a press conference being held outside the entry area to the trade fair. And to illustrate the environmental aspect, this milestone duct will be painted green.
