Optimarin Enters Partnership with Zeppelin

Optimarin has agreed an exclusive partnership with Zeppelin Power Systems for the engineering, supply and after sales service of its Optimarin Ballast System (OBS) technology. Zeppelin, a provider of drive, propulsion, traction and energy systems, will now become the exclusive dealer of the OBS in Germany, Poland, Russia and all CIS countries, with the exclusion of Ukraine.

The agreement, effective immediately, has been made ahead of the anticipated ratification of the IMO’s BWM (Ballast Water Management) Convention, which industry observers now believe is imminent. The ratification will see the approximately 100,000 strong SOLAS fleet rushing to install proven ballast water treatment (BWT) systems – so far only around 3,000 units have been ordered –leading to potential supply and installation bottlenecks.

The OBS is established as the BWT solution of choice for vessels under 60,000dwt, with over 300 system orders placed and 180 systems now installed worldwide. Utilising filtration and high doses of UV irradiation to inactive marine organisms, the system is reliable – with no moving parts and fewer components than competing technology – and, due to its modular design, easy to retrofit. In addition it is IMO and USCG approved (AMS), with certification through DNV GL, BV, RMRS and CCS.

Zeppelin will now offer a complete service for shipowners and yards, from the planning, engineering and the customization of Optimarin’s solution, through to the delivery of turnkey solutions and after sales service. All work will be carried out at Zeppelin’s state-of-the-art engineering facilities in Achim, Germany.

Shipowners that have already installed Optimarin BWT systems include Evergreen, Grieg Shipping Group, British Royal Navy, Siem Offshore, Farstad Shipping, Saga Ship Holding and NYK, amongst others.
