Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation and the global technology standard for managing the movement of cargo through terminals, announced that New Zealand-based Ports of Auckland (POAL) has selected the Navis SPARCS N4 terminal operating system (TOS) as part of a strategic technology investment. With SPARCS N4, POAL will optimize vessel and yard planning, as well as leverage the TOS as a driver for other key process improvement technologies at the terminal.

After a previous engagement with another packaged TOS, POAL reengaged Navis, selecting SPARCS N4 as its platform of choice against competitive options. Key winning qualifications included Navis’ deep industry expertise and low risk profile, the system architecture of the TOS, its integration with third party hardware technologies, the company’s ability to serve as a true technology partner and its commitment to excellence before, during and after the go-live. Lastly, Navis’ ongoing commitment to innovation and R&D was also noted as a market standout, as no other supplier demonstrated the same levels of investment.

POAL is one of the most influential seaport companies in New Zealand, connecting the region’s importers and exporters with more than 165 international ports in nearly 70 countries. Its Auckland facility handles more than 800,000 twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) per year—representing more than 31 percent of New Zealand’s total container trade. With aggressive growth and optimization goals in the year ahead, POAL needs the support of an advanced TOS to meet demand and thrive in the face of industry challenges.

Following implementation, POAL will use SPARCS N4 to enable gate and quay crane process automation with OCR and PDS technologies to drive significant improvements in equipment management. It will also incorporate Navis’ advanced optimization modules into key operations to drive enhanced levels of productivity, efficiency and cost-savings. POAL is excited to partner with Navis to drive maximum levels of use and benefit from these advanced features of the TOS.

SPARCS N4 is Navis’ latest generation TOS that gives terminal operators a flexible and scalable platform needed to optimize their operations, either for a single terminal or for multiple terminals spanning numerous geographic locations that can be managed from one central location.
