CDM is a Western Australian company, and is among the forerunners in aluminum vessel construction systems and fabrication. More than 300 CDM vessels are in operation worldwide.
The company's latest product is the VCS Vessel Construction Software, also known as "boat in a box." The VCS package contains all of the construction data, aluminum plate cutting codes and information necessary to fabricate a selected vessel from more than 100 proven vessel designs.
All a builder needs to do, is take the Aluminum Cutter Disk to an aluminum plate supplier/cutter, obtain the precision cut plate and commence welding in accordance with the detailed construction manual.
The CDM Powerboat range includes vessels from 13.1 to 65.6 ft., for both the leisure and commercial sectors, including dinghies, runabouts, center consoles and sportsfishermen, mono- and multi-hulled ferries, fishing vessels and patrol and rescue craft.
The VCS ensures faultless fabrication on every occasion for both the amateur owner/builder looking for the perfect recreational boat, or the professional builder seeking greater efficiencies, says the company.
Grant Shepperd of South Australia constructed his CDM 18 ft. Runabout without having welded aluminum before. According to Shepperd, "the boat went together easily. Everyone that has seen this boat has nothing but praise for it." The vessel is suited to the recreational fishing - both inshore and offshore - that Shepperd enjoys each weekend.
But CDM is also applicable in the commercial sector, with the Singapore Water Police selecting CDM pilot boats for the best in speed and effectiveness; and CDM was selected to construct 10 vessels in Thailand for the SEAT Corporation.
The VCP is a computer-generated system of aluminum boat construction. A skilled team of experts uses a powerful computer system to transfer three-dimensional designs of vessels into two-dimensional patterns on aluminum plate.
The patterns are carefully positioned, or "nested," to make maximum use of the material, then cut and marked with a NC plasma cutter.
The design, cutting and marking processes need to be performed with precision, to ensure all components fit together efficiently.
According to CDM, benefits of the package include labor-cutting measures, elimination of the need for in-house design and lofting skills, reduction of material wastage and it takes advantage of the strength, weight, long-life and low maintenance features of aluminum.
