Kelvin Hughes Offers Nucleus 3 Radar Series

Kelvin Hughes Ltd., a leader in the development of marine electronics, recently introduced its Nucleus 3 Series Radar systems. The Nucleus 3 Series, which was developed from the Nucleus 2 Series, is touted by the manufacturer as a major enhancement as it meets the latest legislative requirements and is designed to increase system flexibility and performance. The design concept of the Nucleus 3 Series was to provide a system that uses as many common parts as possible throughout the range, an advanced architecture which has allowed the inclusion of additional printed circuit boards or units to widen the number of applications available to the system. Further enhancements of the Nucleus 3 Series include improvements in target detection with a superior data link between transceiver and display, while new and more powerful algorithms provide advanced target tracking performance. In anticipation of new legislation covering the automatic identification system (AIS), a new serial processor, capable of handling large amounts of data, has been added. This will allow AIS data to be displayed, once specifications have been approved. The Nucleus 3 Series comprises 5000, 6000 and 7000 display ranges. The popular 5000 and 6000 displays will include electronic plotting aid (EPA), automatic tracking aid (ATA) and automatic radar plotting aid (ARPA) variants, while the 6000 range will offer both pedestal and split configurations. The new 7000 range incorporates the Kelvin Hughes flat panel display, currently used in the new Naval Tactical Display (NTD). This display has been developed to provide both high brightness levels for daylight viewing and very low background illumination for nighttime use. The Nucleus 3 Series 7000 range uses the same radar processor unit as the split 6000 range and offers either trackball or built-in control in the console and desk mounted units respectively. Both console and desk mounted units can be driven from a remote common core processor to provide full ECDIS functionality. The Nucleus 3 Series 5000 and 6000 displays are scheduled for delivery from May 2001, while the 7000 range will be available from October this year.
