Nigerian Navy Destroys Pirate Boats

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

August 24, 2001

The Nigerian navy has taken a unique tactic to remove piracy from its wates, as it has reportedly began blowing up 11 boats worth $3.6 million as public punishment after they were seized from pirates terrorizing the waterways of the Niger Delta. The demonstration was evidently designed to send a message to bandits who have been taking oil workers hostage. - (Reuters)
