MMA Launches Third Graduate Degree, M.S. Maritime Business Management.

The Massachusetts Maritime Academy has announced the launch of their third Graduate Degree, the Master of Science in Maritime Business Management. The MSMB program
MMA developed the MSMB over a four-year period as a campus-wide collaborative effort with the Academic Dean, the Dean of Graduate & Continuing Education, the undergraduate International Maritime Business Department faculty and input gathered from employers, prospective students, the Graduate Education Council, and MMA graduate and undergraduate alumni.  The MSMB program is certified by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Building on the success of the of the Masters of Science in Facilities Management (MSFM) and Masters of Science in Emergency Management (MSEM), the MSMB degree was created to meet a growing need for deeper knowledge and understanding of complex maritime businesses and supply chains locally, regionally, and globally.  At present, most maritime business and supply chain management professionals “fall into” the profession rather than setting out and developing it into a career. Maritime business and supply chain management professionals are charged with managing and coordinating the business of and shipment through all facets of the supply chain, which represents a considerable portion of our economy since almost 90% of all goods travel at some point by water.

All three Master’s degrees are offered in an executive-style program over a seventeen-month, alternating weekend format in Waltham, Massachusetts.  Classes are based at the Conference Center at Waltham Woods and meet two weekends per month, beginning on a Friday evening and ending on a Saturday afternoon.  Each course in this executive format meets for three weekends, with the exception of the Capstone Seminar which meets for four weekends.

The 31 - credit, 11 - course program includes a combination of lecturing, group discussions, case-study analysis, group problem solving, debates, project research, group and individual presentations, team problem solving exercises, and outside lectures from experts in the field. The program will contain a cohort of 24 students.

While pursuing higher education requires a serious commitment to balancing professional, personal, financial, and academic obligations, with the Executive format, students do not have to interrupt their professional careers.  Only one subject is covered at a given time.  The course schedule is flexible enough to accommodate the working professional. Working students can bring course knowledge directly to their employment, and the diverse student body provides an immediate professional network.

Students desiring overnight lodging stay at the Hilton Embassy Suites located one mile from the Waltham Woods Conference Center.  Overnight hotel stays include a hotel suite, hotel amenities, free Wi-Fi, fitness center, and a breakfast buffet on Saturday morning. Parking is free at both the hotel and the conference center.

MSMB Program costs include: Tuition, instructor fees, Technology fees, Books and Supplies, Lodging, and Food. Additionally, course costs include any specialized course software, all textbooks and materials, conference center administrative support, and snack/beverage support during class breaks. Students also have access to MMA’s main campus library and research facilities.

Program Application Process and Prerequisites:
  • On-line Application
  • Two recommendations from professional, academic, or community sources
  • One official transcript from each college attended
  • A Professional statement on personal and professional objectives
  • An up-to-date resume
  • GMAT/GRE (exempt for students with a 3.0 undergraduate GPA, graduate degree, or with professional and life experiences as deemed appropriate by the selection committee)

The Masters in Maritime Business Management will fill a unique educational niche.  Even though the number of supply chain educational programs is on the rise nationally, few are devoted to the critical maritime aspect of the global economy. With MMA’s long tradition of educating those in the maritime industry, Boston’s location as a hub for maritime commerce, professional maritime associations and trades, and global economies becoming increasingly integrated, MMA is uniquely positioned in the region to offer this maritime business and supply chain management program that will educate future leaders in this rapidly expanding field.
