AS Tallink Grupp has published its unaudited financial results for the first quarter of the current financial year to the stock exchange. The net loss for the period amounted to USD$37.7 million (EUR 33.2 million).“The first quarter was undoubtedly challenging for the company. Consumer and business confidence remains low, with the economic situation in our home markets and ongoing global geopolitical tensions setting the tone. Additionally, extended docking periods and four idle vessels had a significant impact on our results,” said Paavo Nõgene, CEO of AS Tallink Grupp. “On the other hand, if we exclude the impact of the four idle vessels, our results are in line with those of the first quarter of 2019.

Tallink Grupp has entered into new cooperation agreement for 2025 with Finnish non-profit organisation John Nurminen Foundation, whose activities are aimed at protecting the Baltic Sea. In 2025, about USD $0.20 (EUR 0.20) from each Captain’s chocolate bar sold onboard company’s vessels will be donated to the foundation towards key partnership projects aimed at saving the Baltic Sea, its environment and culture. Tallink Grupp’s travel retail subsidiary, Tallink Duty Free, is in its third year of partnering with the foundation.

In the first quarter of the year, AS Tallink Grupp transported 970,359 passengers, which is 12% less than in the same period last year. There was also a decline in cargo and passenger vehicle transport volumes, as economic uncertainty persisted across the region and part of the fleet was either idle or undergoing extended dry-docking.“In addition to the usual seasonality, the first-quarter passenger numbers reflect the state of the economies in our core markets. MAN Energy Solutions has won the order to supply the engines for a newbuild shuttle ferry for Estonian shipping company Tallink Grupp. A diesel-electric plant comprising five MAN 51/60DF dual-fuel main engines – with liquefied natural gas (LNG) as primary fuel – will power the MyStar, which Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) will construct at its yard in Finland. Estonian shipping company Tallink Grupp has announced establishing a subsidiary in Singapore this week – Tallink Asia Pte Ltd – which is the group’s first subsidiary in Asia. The operator of cruise ferries and ropax ships said that the purpose of founding a subsidiary in Singapore is to simplify the development and expansion of the group’s activities in Asia."We have always been open about the fact that Tallink Grupp is continuously looking for opportunities to develop our activities and expand into new markets," Paavo Nõgene, CEO of Tallink Grupp said. Estonian shipping company Tallink Tallink Grupp has borrowed  EUR 197.6 million to finance the new EUR 247 million LNG powered fast ferry currently under construction in Rauma Marine Constructions Oy.The loan agreement was concluded between AS Tallink Grupp subsidiary Tallink Superfast Ltd. and KfW IPEX-Bank GmbH, the shipper said.The loan is arranged and long term financing is provided by KfW IPEX-Bank GmbH. Estonian energy company Eesti Gaas completed the 1,500th liquefied natural gas bunkering operation at the Tallinn old city harbor with the Megastar ferry operating between Tallinn and Helsinki.Megastar is serviced by eight Eesti Gaas’s trailer carriers which were purchased especially for this purpose.“LNG supply has been reliable, and no problems occurred in the thousand times the vessel was bunkered. Tallink’s new LNG fast ferry scheduled to be delivered in 2017 will be named Megastar. The name was chosen among 21,550 name proposals submitted to the public name contest. According to the Chairman of the Board of AS Tallink Grupp, Janek Stalmeister, the name enables the operator to maintain unity among the names in the Tallink Shuttle fast ferry family.“As Megastar will be among the largest of her kind in the world, this name expresses perfectly the characteristics of the ship. Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku Shipyard delivered the state-of-the-art LNG fast ferry Megastar to owner Tallink on January 24. The newly built ferry will begin plying the Helsinki-Tallinn route on January 29 as the most technologically advanced fast ferry in the Baltic Sea. The 212-meter-long Megastar uses liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel, but is also able to run on marine diesel. With LNG, the vessel will create no sulphur or soot particles and decreasing the nitrogen and CO2 emissions.

Wärtsilä has signed a five-year maintenance agreement with Estonia based AS Tallink Grupp for its new RoPax ferry M/S Megastar on the Tallinn - Helsinki route across the Gulf of Finland. Megastar, due to start operation on January 29, 2017, is powered by Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines which operate primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG), to meet the requirements of environmental legislation. Under the agreement Wärtsilä said it will optimize the vessel's performance, enhance its availability and reliability, and improve financial predictability for the customer. The service agreement also covers Wärtsilä's Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and online remote support.

The hull assembly of Tallink’s new fast ferry Megastar started today at the Meyer Turku shipyard with traditional ceremonies. When ready, the new fast ferry will be a pinnacle of ship sustainability and efficiency at Baltic Sea. In addition to its environmentally friendly LNG propulsion, Megastar will have new hull designed by Meyer Turku, resulting in less water resistance and easy sailing in icy conditions. The keel-laying ceremony was witnessed by more than 100 guests from Meyer Turku, Tallink and classification society Bureau Veritas.

A new LNG-driven fast ferry Megastar was christened in Meyer Turku shipyard for owner/operator Tallink Grupp. The environmentally sound ship was christened on July 1 by former president of Finland Tarja Halonen. First steel was cut for Megastar on August 4, 2015, and the keel was laid on February 9, 2016. Float-out and sea-trials are planned for July and the last months of 2016, respectively, followed by delivery planned to take place in the beginning of 2017.
