Newport News Shipbuilding Partners With Commonwealth of Virginia
Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding division is partnering with the Commonwealth of Virginia in support of its major hiring initiative. Gov. Ralph Northam announced that various state agencies and regional community colleges will work with Newport News to augment ongoing efforts to hire as many as 7,000 new shipbuilders over the next five years. Goltens Bolsters Middle East and India Teams
Several senior staff members have stepped up in the latest round of promotions at Goltens Worldwide. Goltens appointed Pravin Kirolikar to the position of Managing Director of Goltens Dubai. Kirolikar makes the move from Goltens India, where he served as Managing Director for eight years. Starting his career as a professional marine engineer, Kirolikar sailed for 13 years before going ashore to work as a marine surveyor for the Indian Register of Shipping. Prior to joining Goltens, Kirolikar worked in after sales services for Wärtsilä India for 12 years.
Hyundai Heavy's New Orders Tallied at USD 2.3 bln
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) Group, the worldâs largest shipbuilding group, announced today that it won 39 ships worth $2.3 billion for January â April period, which is the largest ship orders for the comparable period in three years. HHI Group won 18 ships worth $900 million in April alone. Since the orders include options exercisable by owners to order additional same or similar class vessels, the total orders in April will amount to 31 ships worth $1.5 billion. Considering Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) is now in the final negotiating stage for additional three ships and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) for two more vessels, and an array of other shipbuilding inquiries HHI Group is receiving lately, HHI Group expects more orders to come in May and afterwards.
First LNG-fueled Aframax Tankers Ordered
Hyundai Heavy Industriesâ shipbuilding affiliate Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) said it recently won a $240 million order to build four 114,000 DWT Ice-Class IA aframax tankers from Sovcomflot, the Russiaâs state-owned shipping company. The vessels are said to be the worldâs first LNG-fueled aframax tankers, and will measure 250 meters in length, 44 meters in width and 21 meters in height. They are scheduled to be delivered from the third quarter of 2018 and to be chartered to Shell.

Four major Japanese shipbuilders are in discussions to form an alliance in hopes of riding out the industry slump. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) announced in a press release today that it has entered talks with Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. âThe move toward forming these alliances targets the integration of MHI's strengths in shipbuilding technology and engineering with the three prospective partners' manufacturing capabilities and cost competitiveness,â MHI said.
NAT Acquires Four 150,000dwt Tankers
Nordic American Tankers Limited ("NAT" or the "Company") announced today that it has entered into an agreement to acquire four existing Suezmax sister vessels built in Japan at a world-class shipyard. The aggregate price is $106 million. NAT expects the vessels to be delivered during May, June and July 2016. Between July 2014 and January 2017 a total of 10 vessels have been added to the NAT fleet, including the previously announced two newbuildings due for delivery in August 2016 and in January 2017. Going forward, this total of a 50% fleet increase within a short time span can be expected to produce significantly increased cash flows and solid dividends compared with a smaller fleet.
Newbuild Containerships Delivered to Rickmers
The Rickmers Group informs it has taken delivery of the first two in a series of three 9,300 TEU newbuilds acquired by the group in April while already under construction. The containerships were built at the South Korean STX shipyard and are on long-term charter to CMA CGM. The first of the three ships is the seventh vessel to carry the name R.C. Rickmers, which can trace its heritage back to the founder of the Rickmers Shipyard, and is a reference to the history and shipping tradition of the Rickmers family. Indian Prime Minister Visits HHI
Indian prime minister Narendra Modi visited Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), seeking increased partnership between the Indiaâs shipbuilding industry and HHI. HHI is reportedly the only Korean company the prime minister visits during his two-day stay in the country. In a meeting at the HHI headquarters in Ulsan, Modi and HHI management discussed ways to expand cooperation on naval defense, LNG carrier construction and shipbuilding technology. The prime minister displayed particular interest in HHIâs range of naval vessels as well as high value vessels such as LNG carriers.
