New AI Platform Facilitates Knowledge Transfer in Shipbuilding

Dolgo, a new maritime tech start-up spun out of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ocean Enterprise Accelerator, has announced the development of a new AI software platform that aims to transform shipyard skills training. Florida based Dolgo says the software will retain expertise presently being lost as large numbers of workers retire from the sector. Dolgo is presently undertaking trials of the prototype Large Language Model (LLM) with the University of South Florida College of Marine Science.

MTF Issues New Guidelines for Qualitative Risk Assessments for Alternative-Fueled Ships

The Maritime Technologies Forum (MTF) announced the publication of guidelines for conducting qualitative risk assessments for alternative fueled ships: HAZID and HAZOP.The use of alternative fuels will be key to addressing the "2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships." While the IMO has developed guidelines for design and operation of ships capable of using them, the Alternative Design and Approval process is required for most alternative fuels until mandatory regulations are in place.

BLRT's Tallinn Shipyard Commissions New Floating Dry Dock

On August 8, BLRT Repair Yards' Tallinn Shipyard in Estonia on Thursday commissioned a new floating dry dock, enabling it to maintain, repair and modernize larger vessels.Built to accommodate Handysize vessels, ranging from tankers to passenger ships, the new floating dock measures 180 meters in length, 30 meters in width, and has a lifting capacity of 10,000 tons. It replaces an older floating dock, which measured 155 meters in length and 27 meters in width.The FD22 was completed at the HAT-SAN Shipyard in Turkey in May 2024.
