Gensets: New Fuels but Perennial Goals
Fuel flexibility may be a key driver for recent developments in gensets, but the perennial goals of lowering CapEx and OpEx remain.Fuel flexibility is one of the pillars of decarbonization that is being embraced by genset OEMs. Fuel efficiency, a second pillar, goes hand in hand with that because new fuels will be more expensive, but these concerns come in addition to the on-going drive to reduce CapEx and OpEx for shipowners.MAN Energy Solutions introduced its auxiliary MAN 35/44DF CD engine in June 2023. It is designed to be future-proof and will be ready for methanol operation by 2026.
MAN Provides Gensets for Hybrid Cable-Laying Vessel
Shipbuilder and designer VARD has ordered 4 × MAN 12V175D-MEM gensets in connection with the building of a new purpose-built, cable-laying vessel (CLV) for Danish subsea specialit NCT Offshore. The gensets will form part of the vessel’s diesel-electric DP2 propulsion system, which also includes a hybrid battery package. The high-speed 175D gensets will each come accompanied by compact MAN selective catalytic reduction systems. Furthermore, MAN Energy Solutions states that the engines…
CMB.TECH and DBR Build First Marine Dual Fuel Hydrogen Gensets
CMB.TECH and DBR have developed a dual fuel hydrogen gensets for marine applications. The companies are joining forces to take concrete steps in the decarbonization of the maritime industry. In this collaboration, DBR will be responsible for the construction and delivery of the dual fuel hydrogen gensets, specifically designed for marine applications. CMB.TECH provides the hydrogen technology, including the necessary components. The core of the dual fuel hydrogen genset is formed by the MAN V12-24l engine…
New Car Carriers to Include Methanol Gensets
China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI) has ordered six small-bore, seven-cylinder 21/31DF-M, methanol-burning gensets in connection with the construction of 2 × 9,300 ceu (car equivalent units) PCTCs for China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES).The business represents the very first order for the new methanol-powered, MAN four-stroke genset. MAN Energy Solutions’ licensee, CMP, will build the engines in China with first delivery due in Q1, 2025.The 3 × 7L21/31DF-M gensets aboard…
MTU Gensets Ordered for US Navy's Second Constellation Class Frigate
The Power Systems division of Rolls-Royce has been selected to supply a further four of its mtu naval generator sets for the USS Congress (FFG-63), the second ship in the U.S. Navy’s Constellation Class Guided-Missile Frigate program, previously known as the FFG(X) program. Rolls-Royce has made significant investment at its production facilities in Aiken, S.C. and Mankato, Minn. to support the program and manufacture the gensets in the US.Rolls-Royce is currently supplying mtu gensets for the lead ship in the Constellation Class program…
MTU Gensets Chosen for US Navy Frigate Program
Rolls-Royce said it has been selected to supply its mtu naval generator sets for phase one of the U.S. Navy’s Constellation (FFG-62) class frigate program, previously known as the FFG(X) program. Rolls-Royce has received a contract for the first shipset to provide four mtu naval generator sets, each rated at 3,000 kWe at 1,800 rpm.Construction on the first ship is expected to begin later this year after Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) of Marinette, Wis. was awarded the build contract for the project in 2020…
