New Zealand Navy's largest ever ship Aotearoa, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries, is on its way to New Zealand, after Hyundai held a departure ceremony in its shipyard in South Korea on Wednesday.Ordered in 2016, the $493 million Aotearoa is an Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) vessel that will be used to support Royal New Zealand Navy’s combat operations, humanitarian relief functions, and operational and training support.The vessel is built according to the Rolls-Royce Environship concept design, with a wave-piercing bow which reduces resistance and lowers fuel burn.

Nor Lines and Rolls-Royce have signed a “Power-by-the-Hour” service agreement for the two vessels Kvitbjørn and Kvitnos. The new service offering harnesses the power of “big data” to monitor, plan and perform maintenance and repairs on all the equipment it has installed on the cargo vessels. Power-by-the-Hour is a completely new service from Rolls-Royce Marine, and the agreement with Nor Lines is the first of its kind. The service builds Rolls-Royce’s many years of experience with equipment monitoring, proactive servicing and available solutions in the aerospace market.

A new polar-class logistic support tanker for the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) will be the first naval vessel to feature the Rolls-Royce Environship design with wave piercing bow. The new vessel, which will replace the 30-year-old HMNZS Endeavor, will be significantly larger than its predecessor. Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the world’s largest shipbuilder, has won an order to build a 23,000 ton class logistics support vessel for New Zealand Defence Force’s Maritime Sustainment Capability (MSC) project. HHI was selected as a preferred bidder in December 2015. HHI will deliver the logistics support vessel to New Zealand by the end of 2019. Under the MSC project, the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) plans to replace its replenishment tanker HMNZS Endeavour to maintain replenishment capability for the New Zealand Defence Force. HMNZS Endeavor, which has served RNZN for the past 30 years and is still in good condition, was also delivered by HHI in 1987.

Earlier this year Rolls-Royce was bestowed the Heyerdahl Award for its Enviroship concept. Rolls-Royce informs it has been granted a patent in China for the Environship wave piercing bow technology for merchant vessels. The Environship concept, which can be adapted for different ship types, incorporates a range of Rolls-Royce technologies to deliver efficiency savings for ship owners. The design features a bow with a vertical stem for a smooth entry into the water. When a wave is encountered, the hull shape pierces through the water rather than rides over the top, while the bulb contours the shape of waves along the ship's side to reduce wave resistance.

Solstad Offshore ASA, Rolls Royce Marine, Norled AS and Maersk Line have been shortlisted for the prestigious Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award 2014. The prize recognizes candidates from the shipping industry that have made an outstanding contribution to the environment. The award is presented to the winner by H.M. King Harald at the Norwegian Shipowners’ Annual Conference on March 31. The Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award was established in 1999 by Thor Heyerdahl (1914 – 2002) and the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association.

Alternative to Diesel Strengthens as Barriers Continue to Fall. From the earliest days of mechanically propelled ships, fuel use has been evolving. Starting with wood, fuel changed to coal, which held sway for many years. Oil began to be used in the late nineteenth century and was clearly the dominate marine fuel of the twentieth century. Environmental shortcomings of fuel oil, particularly traditional heavy bunkers, were brought under increasing scrutiny as the twentieth century came to a close.

LNG as marine fuel takes another step forward as Eidsvaag AS took delivery of the first vessel of the Rolls-Royce prize winning Environship range this week, featuring a combination of Rolls-Royce design and technologies which reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40 percent compared to similar diesel powered vessels. Once in operation the vessel will operate a demanding schedule with a weekly round voyage along the Norwegian coast delivering feed pellets to fish farms regardless of weather conditions.

March 2013 saw Rolls Royce collect the Green Ship Technology Award at the Green Ship Technology Conference in Hamburg for its Environship concept, which has lean burn Bergen Engines gas power units at it core. The Environship combines a range of Rolls Royce technologies (Bergen Engines is a subsidiary business) in a cargo ship model that, set against comparable vessels using diesel power engines, offers CO2 reductions of up to 40% (alongside 92% reductions in NOx and 100% less SOx emissions).

Many commercial marine products evolve from military roots. At Euronaval last month in Paris, contractors large and small from around the globe showcased new and emerging technologies. According to General Electric, there is a new era dawning for naval engineering and propulsion. “I’ve seen the future of naval propulsion, and it’s electrifying,” said GE Power Conversion’s Captain Mark Dannatt Royal Navy (retd.), speaking at Euronaval. Capt. Dannatt’s comments came as he outlined the latest advances in advanced naval electrical technology from a GE perspective.

This agreement marks the first time that a customer will utilise the Environship concept for a passenger vessel. The new team will aim to develop vessels for navies, coast guards and other maritime agencies, including variants of the  Environship merchant ship concept, will leverage technologies from commercial Rolls-Royce ship designs and products, adapted and integrated for the specific requirements of naval operations.

Rolls-Royce won a second order for a vessel from its award winning Environship range. This gas powered ship will be used to supply feed to fish farms along the Norwegian coast. The vessel has been ordered by Norwegian company Eidsvaag AS and will operate a demanding schedule to ensure fish are fed at the same time every week, regardless of weather conditions. The NVC 401 Forage Carrier, is the latest ship design from the Rolls-Royce Environship range and incorporates a variety of features to reduce environmental impact while increasing efficiency.

Rolls-Royce received its first order for vessels based on the Group’s award-winning Environship concept. Rolls Royce will design and provide integrated power and propulsion systems for two technologically advanced cargo vessels, which have been purchased by Norwegian transportation company, Nor Lines AS. Nor-Shipping has released names of the winners of the 2011 Clean Ship and Next Generation Ship Awards. The winners were announced today at the Nor-Shipping Opening Conference on May 24, 2011. Nor-Shipping 2011 was more popular than ever with a record 16,235 visitors coming to the exhibition venue, an increase of 4 percent from the previous event two years earlier and the largest turnout since Nor-Shipping began in 1965. A total of 17,298 exhibitor delegates from 54 countries participated in the four-day event, which closed on May 27. In addition to the 16,235 visitors, this resulted in a total turnout of 33,533 delegates to the exhibition, which also featured 22 national pavilions and 5 “theme parks”.
