A Mexican energy developer is seeking U.S. permission to export gas to Mexico, turn it into liquefied natural gas (LNG) and send it to countries with U.S. free-trade agreements, its filing with the U.S. Department of Energy showed.Mexico-based Gato Negro Permitium Uno and partners including Houston-based Big River Energy plan to construct four LNG processing plants in Manzanillo on Mexico's Pacific coast to produce up to 4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG, the company said.Gato Negro began the Mexican permitting process in June 2022, it said in the May 10 filing.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has released two new studies on offshore wind energy in the Gulf of Mexico.The first study, “Gulf of Mexico Offshore Wind Energy Hurricane Risk Assessment” analyzed hurricane risk to wind turbines operating in the Gulf of Mexico. A collaboration between Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Caterpillar Inc. will investigate using methanol as an alternative fuel source for marine vessels.Members of the research team kicked off the project with the installation of a 6-cylinder engine at the Department of Energy’s National Transportation Research Center at ORNL.The ORNL and Caterpillar collaboration focuses on a four-stroke internal combustion marine engine that will be modified to run on methanol.Although methanol has many advantages, it is more difficult to ignite than diesel.
