The Decommissioning, Marine Life Connection

Data sharing and better understanding of how marine life interacts with manmade structures is the target for the next phase of the Insite program. What to do with offshore structures is a sticky problem for oil companies, regulators and policy makers alike, as many structures are starting to cease production in the North Sea, where some fields have been producing oil and gas since the early 1970s.Regulations, which include the OSPAR (Oslo Paris convention) state that a clear seabed should be left behind, once production has ceased, with some exceptions (platforms over a certain age and weight).
Kongsberg/Ricardo in Wind Farm Bearing Collaboration
Ricardo and KONGSBERG say that they have signed a framework agreement that will see Ricardo support the development of the Kongsberg Wind Farm Management System (WFMS) as well as related condition monitoring systems for a range of other industrial sectors. The Kongsberg WFMS is a turbine independent decision support system. It surpasses the functionality found in wind farm supervisory control and data acquisition systems, and offers a modern and intuitive user interface based on KONGSBERG's wide ranging experience in automation and decision support systems for the defence, maritime and offshore oil & gas sectors. KONGSBERG selected Ricardo to support the development of the WFMS not least due to the company's expertise in wind turbine drivetrains.

MSHIPCO Granted Vessel Model Testing Patent

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted MSHIPCO a patent for its Rapid Empirical Innovation (REI®) process including model testing method, platform structure and data acquisition systems. “Time and money are two of the biggest barriers to naval innovation,” explains Bill Burns, Co-Founder of MSHIPCO. Which design provides the best ROI (return on investment) for my maritime service? How far & how fast can a new design go in different sea states? What is the fuel efficiency at different speeds and payloads? Will the passengers be comfortable at high speeds in rough water?
New Subsea Snubbing Unit Safer, Optimizes Rig-Time

Balance Point Control Ltd. (BPC), a Superior Energy Services, Inc. company, has developed the Concentric Snubbing Unit- 160 (CSU – 160) rig assist snubbing unit. According to BPC their new CSU-160 is the first fully remote-operated snubbing unit on the market. Furthermore, BPC built a complete Zone-1 electric-driven hydraulic powerpack with four separate drive banks to set a new safety standard in the industry as this minimizes personnel exposure to pressurized hydraulic lines.
Advanced Subsea
For more than 35 years, Advanced Subsea (AS) has been deeply involved in marine technological innovation. Through steady research and partnerships with research institutes in France and Brazil, Advanced Subsea has been developing new tools, procedures and methods for monitoring oceanographic and meteorological parameters. AS is an independent French company specialized in deep water subsea construction support and services with its head office in Paris and support offices in Houston, Luanda and Rio Janeiro. Advanced Subsea’s Modeling & Forecast Services are based on a partnership between Advanced Subsea SAS & LEGOS – CNRS Laboratory for Geophysics & Spatial Oceanography.
New WBV Motion Analysis Course Explodes Myths

There are many myths surrounding WBV measurement and analysis on fast craft. FRC International has developed a one day course that is easy to understand and delivers the latest information to support vibration exposure assessment, EC compliance and exemption applications. The FRC Motion Analysis Course has been developed in association with Dr Tom Gunston and Dr Trevor Dobbins, two of the worlds leading experts on Repeated Shock (RS) and Whole Body Vibration (WBV) exposure on RIBs and fast craft.

Aker Kvaerner Launches IOR Tool
Aker Kvaerner Launches the PodEx - a new, technology solution to the ever-growing challenge of maximizing oil and gas recovery from mature subsea fields. The PodEx is a module that integrates new functionality and instrumentation directly into the existing subsea control system. It is a cost-effective alternative that requires very little installation time. Its ultimate aim is to optimize production at brownfield developments and enhance environmental safety. The PodEx utilizes spare subsea electrical circuitry or co-existent power supplies to convey increased well and reservoir data to topside data acquisition systems for analysis. It is scalable and offers a transparent communication layer which is adaptable to any subsea application.
Comsat Teams With NOAA and Coast Guard For Maritime Reporting
Comsat Mobile Communications(CMC), a unit of Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications, has teamed with the United States Coast Guard and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to offer free Amver/SEAS (formerly Automated Mutual-assistance VEssel Rescue / Shipboard Environmental-data Acquisition Systems) messaging to mariners that use COMSAT-C satellite messaging service. CMC recently distributed more than 2,000 free packages of Amver/SEAS software to vessels and maritime shipping companies. This software combines Amver capabilities with NOAA volunteer observing ships weather reporting. The software, which uses a message format developed by COMSAT, enables ships to send compressed data via Inmarsat-C terminals using COMSAT-C service.
CMC Celebrates Earth Station's 25th Anniversary
COMSAT Mobile Communications' (CMC) Santa Paula, California, earth station is celebrating 25 years of continuous, around-the-clock operations, providing the critical communications link for customers on land, at sea, and in the air. CMC's west coast facility provides Inmarsat satellite communications coverage from western North America, across the Pacific Ocean and into Asia, the Pacific Rim nations, New Zealand, Australia, and the eastern Indian Ocean. The Santa Paula station has served as a principal communications lifeline providing instant communications to ships at sea, aircraft, and to people located in parts of the world where there is no communications infrastructure. For a quarter century, Santa Paula has often provided their sole means of contact with the rest of the world.
