The US Attorney for the Central District of California has stated that the chief engineer on a tanker pleaded guilty to a felony count of failing to maintain an accurate oil record book (ORB). The chief engineer also admitted that on numerous occasions he directed other engine room personnel to use a hose to bypass the oily water separator (OWS) and discharge oil-contaminated bilge water and sludge into the ocean. He faces up to six years in prison.
