Larrabee and Glass To Receive 2002

Admiral Richard Larrabee, USCG(ret.), Director of Port Commerce for the Port Authority of NY/NJ, and Alan M. Glass, president and publisher of the Journal of Commerce and other transportation industry magazines for 25 years, have been named recipients of the 2002 Connie Awards presented annually by the Containerization & Intermodal Institute. Both will be honored at an industry-wide luncheon on December 12, 2002, to be held at the Marriott Hotel at Newark (NJ) Airport. Each is being honored for careers that have demonstrated leadership in efforts to further containerization and intermodalism. Rick Larrabee was appointed Deputy Director of the Port Authority of NY/NJ in early 2000, coming from his command of the First Coast Guard District. During his last assignment with the Coast Guard, Admiral Larrabee was responsible for all Coast Guard operations and programs in the Northeast U.S., from Maine to Sandy Hook, N.J. As the Coast Guard Captain of the Port of New York and New Jersey from 1990 to 1993, Admiral Larrabee oversaw the development of a new Vessel Traffic Management System and directly supervised the Coast Guard's port safety, security and environmental programs in the NY/NJ region. In his present position, Rick Larrabee was at the helm of his department on Sept. 11, 2001, when the terrorist attack hit the World Trade Center. He played a leadership role in getting much of his staff to safety. He has been acknowledged for his cool-headed management of the port during that period and the restoration of bi-state international commerce under his leadership. "Rick Larrabee's background in the Coast Guard is a plus as the world's ports address the overwhelming issue of security and terrorism. He has experience in all aspects of port management, including environmental, operations and construction" said Michael Berzon of the CII Executive Committee. "This experience has been invaluable to the Port Authority, as it gears up to meet steadily growing demand for the region's cargo facilities in the next decade." Alan Glass has been a low profile, yet prolific publisher in the intermodal field for more than 25 years. Following a stint at The Wall Street Journal, he commenced his logistics publishing career with what was Shipper and Forwarder Magazines and was instrumental in expanding, acquiring and developing products that met the needs of this industry. In recent years, with K-III, Primedia Information Systems and Commonwealth Business Media, he has headed a publishing group that included Pacific Shipper, Cool Cargoes, its various transportation directories, Canadian Sailings, Intermodal and Rail Guides, and other annuals that are the mainstay of the world trade businesses. Most recently, Commonwealth purchased from The Economist Group the Journal of Commerce, JOCWeek, the Shipper Group of Magazines, Traffic World, Air Cargo World, Telephone Transportation Tickler, PIERS, all of the online services and other products of the JOC Group. Alan Glass is the Publisher and President of the 175-year-old Journal of Commerce. "His tenacity, his willingness to invest in covering and keeping our industry informed through good times and bad, have brought Alan Glass' name to our attention for a Connie this year," said Berzon. Previous publishers who have been given the award include Don Becker and David Howard. In addition to the awards, CII will be awarding the Thomas B. Crowley Scholarship, funded and managed by Crowley Maritime, and the CII Scholarship to a Kings Point cadet, which is funded by Connie proceeds and is managed by CII.
