Jotun, Seagull Pact for Onboard Paint Maintenance

The paint and coating suppliers Jotun has co-operated with Seagull Maritime AS, to develop an informative set of e-learning modules on the theme of onboard paint maintenance, with emphasis on in-service treatments.

Corrosion is an enemy of any steel structure in a salt-water environment. One of the best ways to combat this is with the correct application of paint. While major treatments usually take place in the repair yard and form part of the dry-dock budget, in-service maintenance is essential to limit ongoing potential deterioration that can have a real impact on long-term costs.

In addition to extending the life of a ship, a well-maintained ship creates a better impression with owners, charterers and inspectors.

Roger Ringstad, Managing Director, Seagull Maritime AS said: "By collaborating with Jotun, one of the world's leading provider of coating solutions in the marine industry, we are confident that these new hands-on e-learning modules will assist managers and crewmembers to improve onboard paint maintenance. In today’s maritime operations, sustainability and cost reduction are topics we see on every agenda. By doing the work properly, these costs will be reduced, and by using the best coating solutions, sustainability will be maintained.”

However, if paint maintenance is not carried out properly, it is a waste of both time and money. Thorough surface preparation is critical and good application technique is essential. These modules will increase the understanding of painting in a marine environment and assist in training a crew in the safe and effective application of paint.
