Imtech Wins Orders Worth $21M

Imtech N.V., technical service provider in Europe, has won orders worth $21 million to develop and build new technology for diesel-electric propulsion. The Imtech Marine & Offshore Division obtained the orders. Schelde Marinebouw (Koninklijke Schelde) has awarded Imtech a contract to deliver diesel-electric propulsion including electrically powered propellers (Podded Propulsors or PODs, a podded driven propulsion system that will be delivered by the German company Schottel) for the LPD-2 Landing Platform Dock, a new amphibious transport ship for the Royal Netherlands Navy.

The electrically powered propellers provide propulsion and simultaneously serve as a rudder. The system greatly increases ship maneuverability and reduces fuel consumption compared with conventional screw propulsion.

Moreover, the more efficient design of the ship makes it less expensive to build. The LPD-2 Landing Platform Dock of the Royal Netherlands Navy will be the first military transport ship equipped with this high-quality technology. This order is additional to the recently announced 36 million Euro contract to provide the complete technical infrastructure of this ship. Imtech has also received an order from Damen Shipyards (Koninklijke Schelde) to supply diesel-electric propulsion for a light tender for Menas of Bahrain. This multidisciplinary ship will be used for security and inspection tasks. In the United Kingdom Imtech has also been awarded a contract by the Qingshan Shipyard of Wuhan in China to provide diesel-electric propulsion for four oil transport ships owned by F.T. Everard & Sons Ltd.
