Flynn Refrigeration Completes Upgrade on Nuclear Carrier
Flynn Refrigeration has delivered a major package of improvements to the refrigeration and air-conditioning system onboard a vessel used to transport specialist nuclear materials around the world.
Working under contract to ship managers, Serco, the UK based-company completed the retrofit and conversion project on International Nuclear Services’ (INS) MV Oceanic Pintail.
Managing director Alex Flynn said the extensive refrigeration and air conditioning work took 18 months to complete. MV Oceanic Pintail has carried nuclear material globally for 27 years.
“The project was carried out in Barrow, Cumbria, and was part of a widescale upgrade of the vessel,” said Flynn. “Our services included the conversion of the Lighfoot cargo refrigeration system. We retrofitted the entire system using Du-Pont ISECON R417A refrigerant."
“We also replaced the air handling system supply and installed new refrigeration and air conditioning equipment in areas including the control room," Flynn added. "We further carried out the replacement of all air compressors and serviced all the cargo hold fans."
