IBIA Expands in Asia

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

March 1, 2005

THE International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) has opened an Asian regional office in Singapore, home to the largest bunkering market in the world. The office will be staffed by IBIA representative Kam Wah Chong, who is tasked with increasing IBIA's Asian membership.

Don Gregory, IBIA's new chairman, says, "Singapore is the largest bunkering hub in the world, with sales reaching 23.6 million tonnes in 2004. The Singapore MPA also leads the way in setting standards for the marine fuels supply chain, with initiatives such as CP60 and CP77 greatly improving the quality, accountability and image of the bunker industry in the region. IBIA already has a large membership across Asia. The new office will help serve those members and also help us gain more members. An Asian presence makes sense, broadening IBIA's appeal and putting us at the heart of developments in the industry globally."

Ian Adams, IBIA secretary general, says: "It is a sign of IBIA's strength that we are increasing our presence and setting up a base in the largest bunkering market in the world. Having our finger on the pulse of the bunker industry in Singapore, as well as being close to the rapidly expanding economies of China and India will be of benefit to our members."

Kam Wah Chong says: "Establishing a presence in Singapore means IBIA can get to the heart of regional issues that affect the Asian bunkering industry. We look forward to closer co-operation with the Singapore MPA, suppliers, traders and buyers, as well as everybody else that has an interest in the bunker industry across the region."
