New Alfa Laval T35 Heat Exchanger
Alfa Laval announced the addition of the new T35 gasketed plate heat exchanger to its broad portfolio of marine products and solutions. With patented features, the T35/TS35 introduces changes to today’s marine coolers and cooling systems in order to deliver unrivalled thermal efficiency, greater temperature flexibility, minimized fouling and reduced usage of raw material, the manufacturer said, adding, innovations to the frame, plate and gasket designs promise to raise heat transfer efficiency, lower investment and operating costs and reduce maintenance costs.
Alfa Laval said the new T35 delivers the biggest transformation to gasketed plate heat exchangers since it introduced the concept of central cooling systems with these heat exchangers to the marine and offshore industries some 30 years ago.
“Shipowners consider performance, reliability and lifecycle costs as critical factors when selecting new heat exchangers for their vessels. However, the single most important factor for decision-makers is the investment cost,” said Adrian Hogan, Alfa Laval Business Manager, Marine Plate Heat Exchangers. “The T35 is engineered for cost-effectiveness and provides higher heat transfer efficiency, more uptime and reduced installation, operation and maintenance costs.”
Alfa Laval engineers conceived the new T35 to replace the company’s stalwart workhorse, the Alfa Laval M30 heat exchanger, which was introduced in 1989 and is oldest of its size on the market. In addition to central cooling, the Alfa Laval T35 may also be used for lube oil cooling and for cooling in scrubber gas applications.
What’s new?
According to Alfa Laval, cost, efficiency and serviceability are behind the three major innovations, which make its new T35 gasketed plate heat exchanger noteworthy:
•Improved plate design with patented Alfa Laval CurveFlow plate pattern, new porthole design and innovative distribution zone that ensures highly uniform distribution of the media across the entire surface. This significantly improves heat transfer efficiency.
•Patented Alfa Laval ClipGrip gasket system optimized for high and low pressures and for quick mounting and secure positioning. The new design extends gasket lifetime and significantly lowers maintenance and replacement costs compared to gasketed plate heat exchangers that require glued gaskets.
•Enhanced lightweight frame design with optimized frame thickness, two frame heights, updated marine class approval, and new roller assembly and special foot attachment to make opening and closing easier. These enhancements contribute to ease of maintenance.
Higher heat transfer efficiency
The Alfa Laval CurveFlow plate pattern provides flow distribution with uniform flow velocities across the complete plate surface. By maintaining a low pressure drop in the plate distribution area, a greater portion of the available pressure drop is available for heat transfer.
Lower investment and operating costs, reduced carbon footprint
Alfa Laval said that compared to a typical marine central cooling system with conventional plates, the upfront investment costs as well as the operating costs are considerably lower with the T35 and its CurveFlow plate pattern. According to estimates, the T35 can reduce pump electricity costs by up to 20% and, as a result, lower carbon emissions too.
Lower maintenance costs
Moreover, the Alfa Laval CurveFlow plate design also means the T35 requires less frequent maintenance and cleaning than comparable heat exchangers, Alfa Laval claims, saving on spare parts, cleaning chemicals and labor-related costs. Maintenance, when required, is quick and easy, thanks to new T35 features including the Alfa Laval ClipGrip, Five-Point Alignment System and Swing Foot.
