Everyone’s a cAPPtain with Port of Antwerp App
The port of Antwerp is more than just locks, docks, containers, ships and bustling quayside activity, it is also great sweeping vistas of sea, sky and foreshore, nature reserves teeming with wildlife and hidden corners redolent with history. In short, in the port of Antwerp there’s more than enough to keep you going for a fascinating day out, indeed for several days.
To enable visitors to find their way around and pick and choose what to see and where to go, the Port Authority has now developed the Port of Antwerp App. With this app you can choose from a number of fixed routes, or even make up your own route, based on your preferences. On each route there are points of interest along the way, with explanations and comments. And just to keep you on your toes the Port Quiz pops up now and then, to check how much you’re taking in.
“Whether you’re already familiar with the port or don’t know anything about it, whether you’ve got lots of time or only enough for a flying visit, our port App will help you get the most out of your time, following your own preferences. The only condition is that you as visitor must be curious to find out more about the port," explains port alderman Marc Van Peel.
The Port of Antwerp App is divided into several categories: Close by, Mother nature, Long ago, Infrastructure, Viewpoints, Eating & drinking and Discover & experience. Each category comprises various points of interest that are developed in greater depth. For each one there is a photo gallery and information about the location, accessibility, parking facilities (if any) and background information. These points of interest pop up along the various routes programmed into the app.
At the moment there are 12 such routes covering distances that vary from 3 to 60 km. Users can choose to go by foot, bicycle, boat or car. You can also make up your own route: the app asks you how much time you have to spend, your method of transport and your interests, and proposes a route to suit you.
“Like the port itself the Port App is always changing, always developing. The information it contains will be regularly updated and the number of routes will also be extended,” says Van Peel. “It should definitely be worthwhile for users to try the app more than once.”
