Royal Navy Evacuates Britons from Libya

A Royal Navy patrol ship is helping to bring home British citizens after an upturn in unrest in Libya.

HMS Enterprise, which has been on operations in the Mediterranean, arrived at the capital Tripoli yesterday where there has been increased instability and fighting.

Around 110 passengers were transferred to HMS Enterprise by boat and given supplies for the journey to Valetta in Malta where they arrived early this morning for onward transfer.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said, “The Royal Navy is helping British citizens leave Libya based upon ,Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice. I thank the crew of HMS Enterprise for their support and professionalism in carrying out this important task.”

Many U.K. and European personnel have left Libya by commercial means, following the change of the FCO’s travel advice.

“This is a period of uncertainty for U.K. citizens based in Libya but we have been proud to play our part in enabling their move to safety,” said Commander Mark Vartan, HMS Enterprise’s Commanding Officer. “My ship’s company have adapted to the challenge superbly, making as much space as possible and providing essential food, shelter and security for the journey.”

HMS Enterprise sailed from her base port of Devonport, Plymouth in June for an 18-month deployment to complete survey operations aimed at improving safety for seafarers.
