Naval Facilities Engineering Command Honors Design Excellence

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) announced the winners of its 2007 Design Awards program, Oct. 30, to showcase the Navy's best design and construction projects. Projects which were evaluated with such criteria as global and regional planning; facility plans and studies; new facility design; family housing; building alteration and reuse; and interior design by a panel of experts, composed of private sector and government service design professionals. "It's an honor to recognize the winners of this year's design awards. They really showcase the very best of shore facility design and construction that houses our Sailors and families, supports the Navy and Marine Corps warfighters and provides excellent shore facilities to the fleet," said Joe Gott, acting chief engineer, NAVFAC headquarters. Honor awards were given to the Navy bachelor enlisted quarters at Naval Air Station (NAS) Atlanta, and to the CVN Dry Dock 6 floor repair project at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS/IMF), Bremerton, Wash. The bachelor enlisted quarters project at NAS Atlanta constructed two buildings, totaling 38 housing modules at the station, to accommodate a growing enlisted personnel population. An integrated design process was used to address energy and environmental concerns, and create well thought out public outdoor rooms in the housing complex. The CVN Dry Dock 6 at PSNS/IMF Bremerton is the only dry dock on the West Coast capable of accepting the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. The dry dock was in need of crucial structural repairs to the base slab after decades of use to meet fleet readiness. The project used innovative engineering processes to investigate, analyze, design and remediate the structure in a short nine-month time frame, and allow critical maintenance to be performed in a timely fashion on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). Six merit awards were also announced. The NAVFAC Design Awards Program, which began in 1997, recognizes specific achievements by architects, engineers, planners, and other professionals accomplishing design work under contract for NAVFAC that demonstrate and promote excellence in both the built and the natural environment.
