In-Tank BWTS Under Development by Bawat

The Danish company Bawat A / S has developed an in- tank system to treat ballast water on ships where the treatment is conducted while the ship is under way, unlike the existing in-line systems where processing is carried out when the ship is in port.

" We decided to develop a system that is competitive on all parameters – especially on price – which has now been achieved . The current operation is easy , and there is almost no maintenance," says Kim Diederichsen, director of Bawat A / S.


There are no filters, UV radiation or chemicals in the operation. Maintenance is minimal. The technology is based on de-oxygenation and pasteurization of ballast water, utilizing the ship's heat wholly or partly for the treatment.

Unlike many other systems, Bawat's technology works without problems in all types of water - salt water, brackish water and freshwater. The company expects to sell the system to shipowners in 2014.


Bawat's system is close to being put on sale. They have successfully completed two of three planned tests during the voyage of the gas carrier Henrietta Kosan courtesy of a cooperation with Lauritzen Kosan A / S, a division of J. Lauritzen shipping company. Also the land-based testing is almost complete - and also with good results they say.
