Columbia Deepening Project Almost Complete
The Daily News reports that the Columbia River dredging project is approaching two-thirds completion, and supporters of the project are waiting to see if the final $36m appropriation from Congress is passed, so the job can be finished in 2009.
The $150m project, which began in 2005, is dredging the channel of the Columbia River to deepen it from 40ft to 43ft, along a 103 mile stretch from Portland to the coast at Astoria.
Contractors working for the US Army Corps of Engineers have completed a 24 mile stretch from the coast inland, a 7 mile strip in Columbia County and a 14 mile stretch beginning at Portland.
